Functional Areas
Master your position. Select it in the Play Library to highlight your job on every call.
Q — Quarterback
Only voice in the huddle. Call once. “Ready — Break!”
Pre-snap: count front (4-3 or 4-4), find Mike/ILBs.
Clean snap exchange. Cadence: Down · Set · Hut.
Family jobs: mesh on zone/jet/slice; read on option; progression on pass.
A — Running Back / Athlete
Soft hands on mesh. Two hands in traffic. Ball high and tight.
Patience: press, then cut off blocks. Don’t freestyle early.
Pass: protection or checkdown as called.
H — H-Back / Wing
Edge force blocker — especially Indy, Jax, Slice.
OT owns DE. You usually own OLB/force, not the DE.
Motion full speed when tagged.
X / Z — Wide Receivers
Blocking is not optional on runs.
Full speed on every route — even when not targeted.
Know smash depths, flood levels, slant breaks.
Y — Slot / Flex (rarely on LOS)
Usually off the ball. Not default DE blocker.
Motion, intermediate routes, force help as diagrammed.
C — Center
Clean snap. Usually uncovered.
Help DT if winning, then climb Mike / ILB.
No A-gap blitz to wait on — climb with purpose.
LG / RG — Guards
Always Man On head-up DT.
Zone / reach / base / pull / pass set by family.
Never leave DT free to freestyle a climb.
LT / RT — Tackles
Always Man On DE (outside edge of you).
Carolina stick · Indy reach · Jax seal in · Slice down · Pass set · Option leave only if told.
Y is rarely on LOS — you own the DE.
Defenses We Face
Same interior every week. Count linebackers to tell 4-3 from 4-4.
4-3
4 down, 3 LBs (S/M/W). Center climbs Mike. Clear covered pairs on G and T.
4-4
4 down, 4 LBs. Same DT/DE rules. Extra force OLBs — H/WR must win alley. Climb rules fire more often.
